Top 5 Summer Skin Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

ree

As summer approaches, we change our clothes, our routines, and even our mood - but what about our skincare? As the sun bathes us in its warmth, calling for outdoor activities and adventures, the increased exposure can make our skin vulnerable to various issues. From excessive heat to refreshing swims, the fun can often overshadow our need for skincare. Neglecting your summer skin routine can lead to dryness, sunburns, and unwanted breakouts. At Dermalessence, we see the same issues pop up every summer. The good news? They're easy to fix. Here are our top 5 summer skincare mistakes we see and how to fix them.

Mistake 1: Using the Sun as an Acne Treatment

I hear it every year: "My breakouts clear up in the sun!". While it may feel like sunlight helps to dry out breakouts, this is one of the most misleading summer myths.

Here's the truth: UV exposure can temporarily reduce inflammation and dry surface oil, but the long-term damage isn't worth it. Sun exposure dehydrates your skin, leading to rebound oil production and clogged pores. It also weakens your skin's protective barrier, making breakouts harder to heal and more likely to scar.

Even worse, UV rays damage your skin at the cellular level, breaking down collagen, impairing healing, and increasing your risk of hyperpigmentation. That "post-acne mark" will last a lot longer when your skin is trying to recover while being bombarded by UV radiation.

That said, we are not anti-sun. The sun supports mood, sleep, and even vitamin D - but it does not replace a good skincare routine. The key is balance. Get your sun safely, wear broad-spectrum SPF daily, and let a professional acne routine do the heavy lifting when it comes to clearing your skin.

FIX IT: Don't swap your skincare routine for sunbathing. Instead, treat acne with a consistent plan that supports healing without causing pigmentation or barrier damage. Our acne memberships are designed to do exactly that - safely and effectively.

This brings us to the next common summer skincare mistake.

Mistake 2: Skipping Sunscreen

One of the most detrimental skin mistakes during summer is skipping sunscreen. Many assume sunscreen is only necessary for a day at the beach, but Ultraviolet (UV) rays can harm your skin even on the cloudiest of days. In fact, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate through clouds.

FIX IT: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 every day. Ensure you cover all exposed skin and remember to protect often-forgotten areas like your ears, neck, and feet. Reapply every two hours, and don't hesitate to do so more frequently if you're swimming or sweating to maintain protection.

Mistake 3: Skipping Moisturizer

Hot weather can make you feel like your skin doesn't need moisture - especially if it's oily. But skipping moisturizer can actually make your skin overproduce oil or become dehydrated. Dehydrated skin often results in issues like flakiness, irritation, and an overall dull appearance.

FIX IT: Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. Integrate hydrating foods into your meals; for example, watermelon and cucumbers have a water content of about 92% and 95%, respectively. Also, consider using a hydrating serum or moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid. This ingredient can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, locking in moisture for your skin.

Mistake 4: Over-Exfoliating

Exfoliating is vital for removing dead skin cells and achieving a radiant complexion. Between beach days, sweat, and sunscreen buildup, exfoliating sounds like a good idea. But overdoing it - especially with scrubs or strong acids - can lead to irritation, redness, or even sun sensitivity. Over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing these side effects. Studies suggest that exfoliating more than twice a week can lead to increased skin sensitivity.

FIX IT: Tailor your exfoliating routine to 1-2 times per week, depending on your skin type: oily skin may benefit from more frequent exfoliation, while dry skin may need less. Choose gentle exfoliants such as those containing lactic acid or enzymes, which are less harsh than physical scrubs. If uncertain about your routine, consulting an Esthetician is always a smart choice.

Mistake 5: Shaving or Waxing Just Before the Beach or Pool

Shaving or waxing right before sun exposure or swimming might seem like perfect timing, but it can actually backfire. Freshly waxed or shaved skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to irritation, ingrown hairs, and even infection - especially when exposed to saltwater, chlorine, or UV rays.

FIX IT: Give your skin at least 24-48 hours to recover before hitting the beach or pool. And always apply a soothing, fragrance free moisturizer afterward - bonus points if it has anti-inflammatory ingredients like aloe or chamomile.
